Dental implants are an excellent option for restoring missing teeth or for an individual with damaged teeth needing removal. As with most surgical procedures, dental implants take time to heal, depending on variables such as your health and the exact procedure type.

Restoration Dental provides professional dental implant services in Mesa, Arizona. We provide expert opinions before and after dental surgical procedures to help you stay healthy and heal accordingly. If you’re interested in getting a dental implant, here’s what you should know about the process.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts that replace a tooth root. After the post has had time to heal, a dental crown is placed on top.

How Do They Work?

Ask your dentist if you’re a viable candidate for dental implants, especially if you’re missing one or more teeth and don’t want a bridge or dentures. Dental implant surgery provides a more natural tooth replacement than dentures since they are attached to your jawbone.

Dental Implant Procedure

1. Consultation

Before beginning any treatment, the first step is to have a consultation with our dentist. We will evaluate your overall oral health and jawbone density. We will also take 3D scans of your teeth to create your treatment plan. It would be best if you also discussed any medical conditions you might have with your dentist to ensure you’re healthy enough for a surgical procedure. We will also need to address any issues with your oral health, like gum disease, before proceeding with the entire process.

If you don’t have enough bone to support the implant, you’ll also need a bone graft which is an additional dental procedure. You’ll be ready for implant placement about three months after the bone graft.

2. Implant Placement

If the tooth you are replacing is still in your mouth, it will be extracted at this stage. After the tooth extraction, we will insert the implant post. Once in place, we will attach a temporary crown to the top. It will take 3-6 months for the implant to heal properly.

3. Osseointegration

Osseointegration is the process of the artificial root fusing to your jawbone.  The process occurs naturally. All you have to do is maintain good oral hygiene by keeping the implant site clean with regular brushing and flossing, eating healthily, and refraining from smoking or excessive alcohol use. Once this process is complete, you’ll come back to have your permanent crown placed.
